The Evolution of the Cubby House

The cubby house is a timeless structure that has been well-loved by children worldwide for years. They come in all shapes and sizes, some with themes and others left to children’s imaginations, all made with love to help children have a fun space to let their creativity take over.

This is essential in child development, including social skills and empathy, as they play roles in their cubby house. The cubby houses available today have come a long way from the few boards Dad would nail together. They offer even more features that boost a child’s imagination.

The Origins of the Cubby House

The idea of a cubby house stems from imagination itself. The first publicly known cubby house usage was in JM Barrie’s Peter Pan in 1904. A Lost Boy in Neverland shoots Wendy Darling from the sky in the play. Peter Pan and the Lost Boys built a small house around her to keep her safe. This idea was inspired by a little white shed behind JM Barrie’s house where he grew up.

Toy makers jumped at the opportunity to create these for children in their homes. These are known as a “Wendy House” in the UK, but can also be referred to as a playhouse, clubhouse or, of course, a cubby house or just “cubbies” like here in Australia. The original cubby houses in Australia were built by hand, usually by the kids themselves with some grown-up help. They were constructed with scrap materials. They did not last very long, with many tending to last through one season before needing to be put up again.

Safety Concerns

While part of the experience was being able to create a cubby house, safety quickly became a concern for many parents. They weren’t built to any specific safety standard and could be unstable. Splinters from wood and exposed sharp edges and nails would make many cubby houses unsafe. There was an identified need for safe cubby houses for children to use and built to last so they could be used year after year.

Today’s Cubby Houses

Cubbies today can be highly unique, as many are custom-made, such as those from Aarons Outdoor Living. They are constructed with treated, non-arsenic wood, so you have the reassurance that your child’s cubby house is built with safe materials by experts. They are sturdy structures with children’s safety at the forefront of their construction.

Many cubby houses are no longer just four wooden walls with an opening for a door. They have porches, planters, windows, and sometimes even additional play features such as climbing nets and slides. Some cubby houses are extravagant and look like mini-mansions, while others still have that classic small cottage look. The size does not matter so much, as no matter the size, it will still bring joy and endless hours of fun.
